Cleansing is one of the most important foundations of witchcraft. Just like we wash our hands or sweep our floors, our spaces, physical and energetic, need refreshing too. Energy lingers. Stress, arguments, or even just the heaviness of the day can cling to a room. Cleansing clears away that stagnant energy so your home feels lighter, your rituals flow more smoothly, and you can breathe deeper.
There are many ways to cleanse a space, but today I’m focusing on three of the most accessible and powerful: smoke, salt, and sound.
Cleansing with Smoke
Smoke has been used for centuries to carry away unwanted energy. When you burn herbs or incense, the rising smoke transforms and lifts stagnant energy out of your space.
What to Use:
- Incense sticks or cones (lavender, sandalwood, frankincense)
- Dried herbs (rosemary, lavender, mugwort)
- Resin (copal, myrrh)

How to Do It:
- Light your herb bundle or incense until it produces steady smoke.
- Gently waft the smoke through each room, paying special attention to corners, doorways, and windows.
- As you walk, you can say something simple like:
“With this smoke, I release what no longer belongs.”
Tip: Always be mindful of fire safety, keep a dish to catch ashes, and don’t leave burning herbs unattended.
🧂 Cleansing with Salt
Salt is one of the most humble yet powerful tools in witchcraft. It absorbs negativity, protects boundaries, and restores balance.
Ways to Use Salt:
- Sprinkle: Place a pinch in the corners of a room to absorb heavy energy.
- Circle: Create a salt circle around your altar or tools for protection.
- Cleanse Water: Mix a teaspoon of salt into water and sprinkle lightly around your space (great for doorways).
Tip: If you have pets or little ones, be mindful of where you place salt, small bowls up high work beautifully.
Cleansing with Sound
Sound cuts through stagnant energy and wakes up a space. Think of how a song can shift your mood: sound waves carry intention, scattering negativity and replacing it with vibration.
Tools for Sound Cleansing:
- Bells or chimes
- Singing bowls
- Drums or rattles
- Even clapping your hands

How to Do It:
- Stand in the center of your space or move from room to room.
- Ring a bell, strike a singing bowl, or clap rhythmically.
- Imagine the vibrations shaking loose all the stuck energy and filling the room with clarity.
A Cozy Cleansing Ritual
Here’s a simple practice you can try this week:
- Light a candle to set your intention (or use a battery powered candle!).
- Begin with smoke (incense or herbs) and walk the perimeter of your space.
- Sprinkle a small pinch of salt in each corner, whispering, “This space is protected.”
- Close with sound – ring a bell or play a favorite piece of calming music.
- Take three deep breaths, imagining your home wrapped in light.
Closing Thoughts
Cleansing isn’t about perfection, it’s about presence. Whether you use smoke, salt, or sound (or all three together), you’re reminding yourself that your home is sacred, your body is sacred, and your energy deserves to flow freely.
May your space feel light, may your hearth feel protected, and may your spirit feel at peace.
